Moral Injury

Most of us associate psychological harm with stress, burnout, or trauma. But there's a growing body of evidence around a lesser known, but deeply impactful, phenomenon: moral injury.

What is Moral Injury?

It occurs when people witness or participate in actions that violate their deeply held moral beliefs, especially in high-intensity or ethically complex environments.

Unlike burnout, which is driven by exhaustion, moral injury is about ethical dissonance. It can leave people feeling guilt, shame, betrayal, or loss of trust.

This isn’t just a clinical concept; it’s happening across workplaces where people feel forced to act against their values due to systemic pressures, leadership decisions, or cultural norms.

Often associated with healthcare, social work, the military, it is also evident in corporate sectors - such as during crisis response or redundancy processes.

At March on Stress, we’ve been proud to pioneer support in this space. Our Director, Professor Neil Greenberg, is a leading expert on moral injury and psychological trauma, working internationally to help organisations understand and mitigate this harm.
