Another year has flown by, and we would like to say a huge thank you to all our clients for your continued commitment to supporting your colleagues with evidence-based mental health support and care in the workplace.
It was fantastic to see lots of you at the March on Stress conference earlier this year and we look forward to opportunities to get together again in the future.
We hope you will find our latest roundup of news useful, and as ever, please get in touch if we can help you with anything further.
This year we have made our Christmas charity donation to AMMF. Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful festive period and very best wishes to you all for 2024.
Best wishes,
The March on Stress Team
We had a fantastic day at the March on Stress conference back in February! Huge thanks to our excellent speakers and all of our wonderful attendees. It was great to get together in person for a day of learning and we hope to run our next full conference in 2025. We are also exploring the option for some smaller CPD events next year so please watch this space for further details.
Another good source of CPD is the UK Psychological Trauma Society, please see their upcoming events here.
There is a great new resource available for responders from the Resuscitation Council UK, with March on Stress Managing Director, Professor Neil Greenberg, one of the expert authors involved. The resource is available here.
We will be running monthly TRiM all comers courses in 2024, as well as regular StRaW all comers courses.
Please see upcoming dates and details on our website here or get in touch to book. We do offer reduced rates for public sector and charity, so please contact us for more information.
March on Stress will be back at the NEC in Birmingham in March 2024 for the annual Health and Wellbeing at Work conference. Some of our team attended the event earlier this year and it was great to see so many friendly faces there as well as meeting lots of new people. We are already looking forward to returning, please feel free to visit us at stand 209 if you are going along!
We have worked with the rail industry for a number of years now and have really enjoyed getting to know clients from organisations right across the industry.
We were delighted to be invited to sign the Railway Mental Health Charter, the result of fantastic and dedicated work by Lee Woolcott-Ellis of Southeastern Railway.
Find out more about the charter here.
Our new short training session, led by our clinical team, to provide some basic self-help tools (Enhanced Coping Skills (ECS)) has had a positive start, with a number of sessions run for NHS, local authority and NGO clients.
While not a substitute for wider organisational training and support, feedback suggests the sessions are a useful additional tool – giving delegates a few techniques to use and practice in order to help themselves when faced with challenging situations. Members of the March on Stress office team have themselves recently attended the training.
Find out more about ECS here.
The Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) has published a helpful report to provide an overview of good practice guidance for managing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace, and the role that HR and Occupational Health have within it.
The report, released in November 2023 is available here.
We have talked before about providing TRiM response interventions for organisations, and this is something that has continued in 2023. While the circumstances for which we are contacted are undoubtedly challenging for our clients, we are glad that we can be a steady and experienced source of support in these times.
In addition to TRiM responses we have carried out following traumatic events this year, our experts have also been called upon to visit client organisations experiencing ongoing difficulties – sometimes due to the anniversary of an event or an investigation process or even just a couple of months post-event when the ‘TRiM window’ is technically closed. On these occasions our experts are able to offer effective peer support – pivoting between TRiM, StRaW® and REACTMH®, depending on what the individual presents them with. It’s a real credit to the vast experience and expertise of our team that this is possible.
Our clinical team has also been on hand to give more in-depth support when required – with referrals coming in a variety of ways – through TRiM and peer support interventions mentioned above; direct from client organisations – both those we have worked with for many years and others new to us – and also from our psychological monitoring or ‘Wellness’ e-surveying service.
The March on Stress clinical team has also been providing additional services recently in connection with the conflict in the Middle East. While operationally, a contingent of associate TRiM trainers are now up and running in Ukraine, following training from March on Stress experts.
We will continue to support our international clients and colleagues during these difficult times.
The NHS TRiM network continues to go from strength to strength. Established two years ago, there are now over 25 organisations involved.
The network aims to help organisations support the mental health and wellbeing of staff, with those involved supporting each other and sharing knowledge, experiences and resources.
The group holds regular virtual meetings where ideas are shared, guest speakers attend to talk about TRiM as well as external speakers to talk about wider health and wellbeing and moral injury.
The network was established by TRiM leads, trained by March on Stress, from University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Royal United Bath NHS Trust.
Our very own Professor Neil Greenberg has been named in the top 0.1% of researchers.
The prestigious ‘Highly Cited Researcher’ 2023 list, published by Clarivate, recognises researchers who demonstrated significant and broad influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade.
In addition to his role at March on Stress, Neil works as Professor of Defence Mental Health at King’s College, London, alongside academic colleagues at the forefront of scientific study and research.

While on the topic of research, here are some links to research published in 2023 that you may find of interest:
Management of acute psychological trauma – Presents approaches to managing acute psychological trauma that require no specialist equipment or lengthy training. Although the techniques identified in the article, including Trauma Risk Management (TRiM), have been developed mostly for military, media, and charity groups, the authors explain that they can be applied in any environment (although with adults only).
Importance of clinical waiting times – This research showed that delaying mental health treatment is costly both practically and emotionally.
Mental health screening for trauma exposed workers – Looks at mental health screening protocols in organisations that routinely expose workers to intense psychosocial hazards. The authors explore some of the nuances that exist in the area and identify that despite its widespread use, current evidence to support the effectiveness of formal mandated mental health screening in organisational settings is lacking.
Hot on the heels of his recognition as a top researcher, March on Stress Managing Director Professor Neil Greenberg has been awarded a prestigious honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.
The honour was given in recognition of his influence and achievements within occupational mental health and his continued support of this important discipline.
On the same day, he delivered the highly respected 36th Smiley Lecture for the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in Ireland.

If you need us during the festive period, please email info@marchonstress.com and, while responses may be a little more delayed than usual, we will get back to you as soon as possible.
